History buffs can visit the Historic Mattie Beal Home, which is a Neoclassical Greek Revival style home with a Mediterranean Roof and Baroque ornamentation. It was built in 1907 to 1910 by Mattie Beal Payne and Charles Warren. Mattie Beal was a young telephone operator from Wichita, who chose a 160-acre tract on the southern edge of Lawton in the land lottery of 1901. Today, the historic structure remains open for visitors to see.
Fort Sill is the last operating army outpost from the 19th century Indian Wars. It is also the final resting place of many famous American Indians. The post is now home to a field artillery school.
Elmer Thomas Lake and Park and recreation area is located on the boundary between the Fort Sill Military Base and the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. This is a one stop shop for family recreation, on a 350-acre lake, which is surrounded by elk, free-range buffalo, native prairie, longhorn cattle Canadian geese and more.
